Zeppelin Museum (GER)

The fascinating world of Zeppelins - from their international climb to the top to their tragic decline - is told by this impressively designed museum. It is located directly on the harbour and near the train station in Friedrichshafen.

The famed white building in the harbour really stands out. Home to the Zeppelin museum since 1996, it was styled according Bauhaus architecture. The exhibition includes the world’s largest collection of artefacts surrounding the history of blimp construction. At the same time, the museum is also devoted to art from the Lake Constance area. It presents valuable works such as the Otto Dix collection or the photos of Andreas Feininger.

A partial reconstruction of the LZ 129 Hindenburg gives visitors an impression of just how comfortable and elegant travelling with a Zeppelin once was. Every passenger had his or her own cabin and there was a common room, noble dishware and stunning views. The tragic fate of the Hindenburg in Lakehurst in 1937 is also documented as is the history of Zeppelin works, which was headquartered in Friedrichshafen.

Zeppelins were in use from the year 1900, though they experienced their hay-day in the 1930s. In fact, the first transatlantic flights between Europe, North America and South America began from 1930.
