Pfahlbaumuseum Unterhuldingen (GER) pile dwelling museum

A museum on the shores of Lake Constance welcomes you to a pile dwelling village from the Stone and Bronze ages. The area, which features reconstructed pile dwellings (stilt houses) and exhibition buildings, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the Stone and Bronze ages, people in the Lake Constance area erected buildings on piles (as they did at other lakes as well). These ‘pile-dwellings’ offered protection from enemies both human and animal. These settlements were also located in close proximity to trade routes.

In Unteruhldingen, a club has dedicated itself to life in these pile-dwellings since the 1920s. In cooperation with Tübingen University, the first pile dwellings reconstructions took place in Unterhuldigen in 1922. Today, the museum features numerous pile dwellings from village centres to ancient workshops. There are also museum buildings located on the shore. Using the latest findings, a multimedia presentation illuminates life in the Stone and Bronze ages.

The Archeorama has displayed the UNESCO World Heritage pile dwellings since 2013. During a virtual dive with 360-degree views, see what it looks like underwater, discover the work of diving archaeologists and better understand how the stilt constructions were made.

Programmes

There are a variety of guided-tour options for visitors depending on the season and how busy it is. For example, there is a classic 30-minute tour that begins with an introduction. Afterwards, visitors can explore independently. Winter tours are offered from November to March. The exhibitions rooms with original artefacts and some of the pile dwellings can be viewed independently after a guided tour.
