Alberschwende Heimatmuseum

Alberschwende Heimatmuseum

The Heimatmuseum Alberschwende is spread over two locations and provides insights into rural farm life and living culture in the 18th and 19th centuries in the Bregenzerwald. One focus concentrates on the process by which flax becomes linen.

Dr Collector

The Arzthaus (Dr’s house) is the museums main location. The initiator for the museum was Ulrich Mittelberg, a veterinarian from Alberschwende. He collected everything that otherwise might have been lost for future generations or just fallen prey to dealers. With the support of two architects, the museum opened in July 1977 and was newly renovated in 2000.

Mesmer’s barn

The “Wäldar ka nüd jedar sin” exhibition – “not everyone can be a native of the Bregenzerwald” – deals with the question of whether Alberschwende belongs to the Bregenzerwald or not. It presents historical maps and allows visitors to find the answer … at least in a territorial sense.
